How to Plan a Weekly Grocery Shop on a Budget

A simple routine for getting more from every trip.

Trolley of groceries in the store

Most families do not overspend on one big thing. It happens in small amounts, across several trips a week, on items that were already at home. A little planning turns that around without making shopping feel like a chore.

Start with what you already have

Before writing a list, look in the cupboard, the fridge and the freezer. Plan two or three meals around what is already there. It costs nothing and it is the single biggest saving most households can make.

It also stops the quiet duplication that fills a shelf with four bags of rice and no lentils. If you are not sure what is in the back of the cupboard, take a photograph of it before you leave. It is quicker than writing anything down, and you will have it with you in the aisle.

“The cheapest meal in the shop is the one already in your cupboard.”

Shop once, not five times

Every extra trip adds items nobody planned to buy. One considered shop a week, with a short top-up for fresh bread and milk, almost always costs less than shopping whenever something runs out.

Buy the sizes that suit your family

  • Rice, oil, detergent and tissues are cheaper per kilo or litre in the larger packs, and they keep.
  • Fresh items are better bought for the days ahead, not the fortnight — the saving disappears if food is thrown away.
  • Check the weekly flyer before you leave, and build a meal or two around what is on offer.
  • Compare the price per kilo rather than the price on the shelf edge. It is the only way two different pack sizes can be compared at all.

Fresh, frozen and the gap between them

Frozen vegetables are picked and frozen quickly, which is why they often hold their goodness better than fresh ones that have travelled a long way. For anything going into a curry, a stew or a rice dish, frozen is usually the sensible buy, and it does not spoil if plans change. Keep fresh for the things eaten raw, where texture is the point.

Let the flyer do some of the planning

A new flyer starts every week and runs for a set number of days. Reading it before you write the list, rather than after, is what turns an offer into a saving — you are choosing meals around what is cheap this week, instead of hunting for discounts on a list you have already committed to.

The store is open 24 hours, so the quiet hours are an option if a calm, unhurried shop helps you stick to the list. Late evening and early morning are the emptiest, and a trolley you can steer in a straight line is worth more to a budget than most people expect.
